Dear Parents & Carers,
After a very autumnal start to the week, it was a treat to witness the return of the sunshine and warm weather over the past few days, and it has been a pleasure to see so many happy children, staff and parents around the school. We managed to capture a few lovely photos of some children enjoying this weather outside in the Prep play areas. Please see the gallery below.
That said, the last five days have been far from a holiday as Cognitive Ability Tests (in years 3 to 6) have accompanied a healthy dose of industry and application in classrooms across the School. As I have written before, we often remind the children about the importance of ‘working smart’ so that they can reach their potential in the classroom and enjoy break times to the full – this remains a work in progress, but we are most certainly moving in the right direction.
Our theme for the week has been ‘making the most of our opportunities’, and this is critically pertinent as we find ourselves entering the second quarter of the term and time is simply flying by. We touched briefly on Einstein’s perspective that ‘time is relative’, noting that sitting with a pleasant companion may make an hour feel like a minute, whereas sitting on a hot stove makes a minute feel like hours.
We identified that there are so many opportunities available to us here at Truro School Prep and that these come in all sizes and guises. We also noted that sometimes we miss opportunities to improve and better ourselves because, at face value, they don’t look quite as glamorous and shiny as some easier options: as Thomas Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work”. Finally, we agreed that success is often less about having the greatest natural talent and more about making the most of the opportunities that are placed before us on a daily basis.

Turning my focus to today, Friday 25th of September, we took the opportunity to support the Children’s Cancer Unit Fund at the Royal Cornwall Hospital with a ‘non-uniform day ’, which took place alongside the ‘European Day of Languages’. From assembly through to themed lessons and lunch, we were given plenty of opportunities to explore and develop our understanding of our neighbours, both across the channel and further afield. My thanks go to all who helped to make it such an enjoyable event and especially to Mrs Ferguson Cooper for organising and leading the day.
I also take this opportunity to thank those of you who were able to join us for our Macmillan Cancer Research coffee morning today. I hope that you enjoyed the opportunity to meet and chat with friends old and new, and to support this excellent charity.
Looking to the future, we have sporting fixtures (far and wide), assemblies, Harvest Festivals, English and Art trips, and the House Music Competition – all before half term. From a parent perspective, Learning Progress Meetings take place across the next couple of weeks (see details from Mr Dove), and please remember that the Senior School Open Morning takes place on Saturday, 3rd October.
I look forward to seeing you all in the days and weeks ahead and, in the meantime, wish you all a wonderful weekend with your lovely children.

Senior School Open Morning Saturday 3rd October
Our Senior School Open Morning on Saturday 3 October 2026 is a wonderful opportunity to explore the next stage of your child’s Truro School journey and discover all that Senior School life has to offer.
During the morning, you will have the opportunity to hear from our Head about life and learning at Truro School, explore our beautiful campus with one of our pupil tour guides, meet teachers and current pupils, visit academic departments and take part in a range of interactive activities, and discover the opportunities available both inside and outside the classroom.

The Open Morning is designed to give families a real insight into life at the Senior School, from our broad and inspiring curriculum to the extensive co-curricular opportunities, pastoral care and individual support that help every pupil to thrive.
It is also a great chance to see how we support pupils as they move from Prep School into Senior School, ensuring they feel confident, happy and ready to make the most of every opportunity.
Whether your child is already planning their move to the Senior School or you would simply like to find out more about the years ahead, we would be delighted to welcome you and answer any questions you may have.

Truro Prep House Music Competitions – Autumn Term 2026
We are delighted to announce the first of this year’s two House Music competitions. The Solo Performance Competition will open for entries from Monday 21st September.
This much-loved annual event continues to showcase the fantastic musical talents of our pupils and always provides a wonderful variety of performances.
How to Enter

We are fortunate to have an excellent team of visiting music teachers who are often happy to help pupils make recordings at school. Families are equally welcome to record performances at home.
While an accompaniment is not required, it can enhance a performance. Accompaniments may be live or provided via a backing track.
Competition Final
Following the submission stage, pupils will select the finalists during House Assemblies. The final will take place on Friday 16 October at 2.15pm in the Assembly Hall, where a visiting adjudicator will judge the performances and award the results.
Parents and families of all finalists selected will be warmly invited to attend and support the pupils at the final.
House Singing Competition
Later in the term, we will also be welcoming back the ever-popular House Singing Competition. Staff will work with their Houses to prepare a festive performance of a popular Christmas song.
The competition final will be held in school for pupils only. However, families will have the opportunity to enjoy all four House performances at our Annual Christmas Concert on Monday 7 December at Truro Methodist Church.
Further details about this exciting event will be shared later in the term.
